Film Fling held a successful film festival in Carlisle in May 2017. Now our aim is to engage with local film makers, local communities and engage with anyone and everyone who has an interest and a passion for film.
The Film Fling is a celebration of film past, present and future here in Carlisle. It’s a celebration of independent film making in a place that since the closure of the City Cinema – the Lonsdale’s last stand, if you like – has had no independent cinema. Tullie House has a Monday Alternative and Carlisle Cult Cinema Club has recently started a night in Harraby while different groups organise one off showings at various venues. The Old Fire Station – now the city’s arts centre – is vibrant but, as yet, has no dedicated cinema space. The Film Fling is, hopefully, a step toward bringing these separate strands together.
It’s also a celebration of the creativity and invention of a younger generation of film makers who have come through the city’s schools and colleges and who, in one way or another, continue to work in an industry they love – hence the invaluable support of Carlisle College – and through listening to them talk about their work we hope to take a look at the different ways and forms in which films are made, distributed and displayed in a time of rapidly changing technologies.
Mostly, however, we just want to share some stories about films and film making and the people who make them and the place where we live. And we want to do that because it’s stories that hold us together and make us who we are and because it’s films – films of all kinds – which give us one of the most enjoyable ways of telling stories that we have.
